In Christian hagiography, Saint George was one of the soldiers in the guard of emperor Diocletian. Venerated as a martyr, Saint George is one of the most venerated saints in the Orthodox World. He is the patron saint of Greece, England, Ethiopia, Aragon, Portugal and Russia as well as a wide range of professions and disease sufferers. In Greece, he is the patron saint of the Greek Army. His feast is celebrated on April 23. The name George comes from the Greek name “Γεώργιος” which means the one who works on the earth.
