This representation of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus is one of the most wonderful variations, found in the 15th century. It is characterized from Virgin Mary’s stance and Jesus’ movement. His whole body is turned toward Mary, with his back to the viewer and his back is tilted backwards. His neck and chin touch Her face.
This icon is found in the Temple of Saint John Prodromos, in the Greek island of Naxos.
Jesus’ stance is not accidental and does not depict joyful and happy moments of baby Jesus. On the contrary, the meaning of the position is connected with the future Passions of the Christ.
